Kiriyama looked up and his jaw dropped. The red and silver figure towering over the gully was at least forty meters tall, humanoid but not human. Another alien?

He heard Furuhashi give a nervous laugh. ‘Is it Take-Your-Giant-Alien-to-Work Day already?’

‘It’s okay,’ Anne said. ‘He won’t hurt us. He’s on our side.’

How the hell would you know that? The question was on the tip of Kiriyama’s tongue. But when he opened his mouth, he heard himself say, ‘Anne’s right. We have nothing to fear from him.’

The police officer was still clutching Kiriyama’s sleeve, demanding to know what that monster was, dammit! Then Amagi pulled the cop away, telling him they needed to gather everyone together before someone fell off a cliff. Amagi, the strategist. Kiriyama felt his own heartbeat start to slow, then speed up again as the red and silver colossus bent to take hold of the spacecraft in his arms.

‘　　The giant just picked that spaceship up like it was a toy,’ Amagi said later when they were all debriefed. ‘He—I’m just guessing but I’m pretty sure that was a he—anyway, he just picked it up like he knew it wasn’t supposed to be there and then he just—flew away.

‘But the strange thing—I mean the really, really strange thing about the whole situation was, I wasn’t afraid. Not for my team or the TDF or the hostages, who were all screaming and yelling with terror. I knew it was okay and he was there to help. But don’t ask me how I knew. I just did.’

　　* * *

To Kiriyama’s relief, the rest of the day was far less eventful.

All the captives had been accounted for and were undergoing treatment for trauma. On returning to HQ, the Ultra Guard found a party atmosphere in force; even the Joint Chiefs seemed to be in a celebratory state of mind.

Eventually, Kiriyama knew, things would calm down. When the TDF members who’d been captured were discharged from the clinic, they’d have a much longer debrief ahead of them—more than one, probably. But for now, they were all entitled to a break.

‘I’d say we were lucky that stranger showed up when he did,’ Anne said as they gathered in the Strategy Room for a review of the incident with the Joint Chiefs.

‘You mean the red and silver guy, the giant?’ Furuhashi asked.

Anne laughed a little. ‘Yes, we’re lucky he was there—whoever he is. But I was actually thinking of Dan Moroboshi. Who knows how many more people would have been taken if he hadn’t warned us about what was going on.’ She looked around at the others. ‘Only now he’s disappeared. Anyone know where he went?’

　　‘For a fitting,’ Kiriyama said.

As if on cue, the door opened and Yamaoka came in, looking more pleased than Kiriyama had ever seen.

‘Attention, everyone,’ Yamaoka said. ‘I’d like to introduce the newest member of the Ultra Guard—Dan Moroboshi.’

　　• Eye Slugger：
　　• Emerium Beam：
